Baptism & Confirmation

@ St. Gabriel's

Baptism and Confirmation are ways that we, as followers of Christ, can make a public declaration of our faith, so that the change that happens inside is evident outside.

What Is Holy Baptism?

Holy Baptism is a sacrament in the Church and as such, it is an outward and visible sign of inward and spiritual grace.  The outward and visible sign is water, in which the person is baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  The inward and spiritual grace in Baptism is union with Christ in his death and resurrection, birth into God’s family (the Church), forgiveness of sins, and new life in the Holy Spirit.

What is Required of Us at Baptism?

It is required that we renounce Satan, repent of our sins, and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

So Why are Infants Baptized?

Infants are baptized so that they can share citizenship in the Covenant – membership in Christ – and redemption by God.

How are the Promises for Infants Made and Carried Out?

Promises are made for them by their parents and sponsors, who guarantee that the infants will be brought up in the Church, to know Christ, and be able to follow him.

What is Confirmation?

Confirmation is a sacrament, a rite by which we express a mature commitment to Christ and receive the strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop. There are two times per year that Confirmation is available with the bishop. One is in December at the Cathedral of St. Philip and one occurs when the bishop makes his annual visit to St. Gabriel’s.

Confirmation, or being received in the church, is important to our parish community and we support individuals participating in this sacrament with our Inquirer’s Classes (prior to Confirmation). The Inquirer’s Class is open to everyone, not just those preparing for Confirmation or Reception. The classes are open to anyone who would like to learn more about our faith or renew their understanding of their faith. [Learn More about our Inquirer’s Class.]

What is Required of Those Being Confirmed?

In order to be confirmed, candidates must first have been baptized, must be sufficiently instructed in the Christian Faith, must be repentant of their sins (must have turned away from their sins), and be ready to affirm their confession of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
